Andreas Gsellmann Welschriesling 2021, Burgenland, Austria

Andreas Gsellmann’s family has been making wine since 1800. He farms 21 hectares of vineyards in Gols in the Pannonian basin. Wine has been made here for 2,000 years and was actually part of Hungary till 1921, so there is a certain sharing of winemaking culture in parts as well as grape varieties.

Welschriesling is an important white grape variety which, as Germans are keen to point out, is completely unrelated to the Riesling grape. As a wine, Welschriesling is at its finest in Austria, specifically in some particularly finely balanced, rich late-harvest wines made on the shores of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland.

This wine brings a zesty, mineral freshness, it’s acidity lends itself to accompanying food, the fruit balances well to give a great aperitif.

Wine has been made here for 2,000 years and was actually part of Hungary till 1921, so there is a certain sharing of winemaking culture in parts as well as grape varieties. The climate is also quite a bit warmer than other Austrian wine regions. The nearby Lake Neusiedl moderates the hot, dry summers and strong winds aerate the vineyards. Gravelly soils were created from deposits from the receding Pannonian sea and offer excellent drainage. Since 2010, Andreas has been farming biodynamically and is a member of Respekt, a group of “young, dynamic and non-dogmatic” winemakers in Austria, Germany and Hungary.
