CORKAGE NATURAL WINE CASE
A case of 6 great natural wines to enjoy wildly (responsibly).
Tour de Gendres Sauvignon/Chenin ‘Pet Nat’ 2021
On some of the most beautiful land in southwest France, Château Tour des Gendres sits in the appellation of Bergerac. The de Conti family has run the farm here since the early 1900s, turning the farmland to vines in 1986, and converting to organic in 1994.
It’s a very fresh, light-bodied Petillant Naturel,(Pet Nat for short) of just 11% ABV with a gentle mousse and a gentle touch of lees influence. Very fresh and grassy, with aromas of green apples and cinnamon and zippy, vibrant acidity on the palate. Easy to drink and very refreshing.
Country: France
Region: Bergerac
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc
Volume: 75cl
ABV: 11.5%
Vintage: 2021
Suitable for Vegans: Yes
Suitable for Vegetarians: Yes
Food pairing: Try as an aperitif or with sushi, smoked fish or goat’s cheese.
Riesling Andi Knauss 2021, Wurttemberg, Remstal, Germany
Andi Knauss, who now is in his early thirties, started to work together with his father at their family estate in the Remstal region, east of Stuttgart, in 2004 as the fourth generation. Vineyard land here is expensive, but Andi has slowly built up the estate parcel-by-parcel, sometimes just a row, and today he works 15 hectares of vineyards.
This great Riesling is very easy drinking, refreshing and crisp, with aromas of green apples and lemons, and some spice and herbal elements. It has a great acidity and delivers lemony citrus notes with a hint of salinity.
Grapes: Riesling
Abv: 12%
Bottle: 750ml
Pair with spicy foods, South East Asian dishes with a bit of heat.
Savagnin Ouillé Marie-Pierre Chevassu-Fassenet 2018
Les Granges-Bernard is a wonderful old Jurassien farm surrounded by pastures on the plateau behind Menétru, and it is here that Marie-Pierre Chevassu-Fassenet was brought up with her three sisters. Her mother Marie came from a family of vignerons and her father Denis farmed mainly cows.
The Savagnins, which come from En Beaumont, are aged in three locations: a small amount in a loft, another small part in a semi-underground cellar, and three-quarters underground, meaning, as is classic for Château-Chalon, less temperature variation during ageing, aiming at finesse and elegance.
A deliciously funky Jura white made by a natural wine hero. Citrus peel, flaky sea salt and crisp stone fruit. Amazing with cheese!
Fun fact: ‘Ouillé’ translates to ‘topped up’ in reference to filling the barrels up so as to prevent oxidisation.
Country: France
Region: Jura
Grape: Savagnin
Volume: 75cl
ABV: 14%
Vintage: 2018
Suitable for Vegans: Yes
Suitable for Vegetarians: Yes
Food pairing: Treacle-roasted ham studded with cloves, pan-seared chicken thighs with morels and white wine sauce, nutty alpine cheeses, or butternut squash risotto with rosemary and hazelnuts.
Piccola Peste Rosso Veronese IGT 2019
Terre di Pietra is a relatively recent winery, based in the eastern section of the Valpolicella region. It started off in 2005 when a talented, passionate woman, Laura Albertini, just 25 years old, was given a bit of garage space at her father-in-law’s house in which she could make wine.
Their vineyards, some 4 hectares, are located in 5 small hillside plots ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level. The historic area is characterised by very dark soils rich in sedimentary stones, hence the name Terre di Pietra (Stone soils). In the Marcellise area the land is rich in white limestone. Both soils are very poor and this results in low yields and wines with rich tannins and good acidity.
This Valpolicella is a wild and wonderful light red with buckets of tart cherries and fresh rosemary. Serve it slightly chilled to taste it in all its glory.
Country: Italy
Region: Valpolicella
Grape: Corvina 60%, Molinara 10%, Rondinella 30%
Volume: 75cl
ABV: 11.5%
Vintage: 2019
Suitable for Vegans: Yes
Suitable for Vegetarians: Yes
Food pairing: Go traditional here with Northern Italian salami or a simple tomato and balsamic bruschetta.
Jean-Claude Lapalu Brouilly Vielles Vignes 2021
One of the stars of Beaujolais, Lapalu produces wines in a traditional style. His wines have an intensity reminiscent of Burgundy Pinot Noir (his 2018 vintage was rated very highly and he’s gone from strength to strength).
Country: France
Region: Beaujolais
Grapes: 100% Gamay
Volume: 75cl
ABV: 13%
Vintage: 2021
Suitable for Vegans: Yes
Suitable for Vegetarians: Yes
Food pairing: Lean red meats, French-styled pork sausages and salty hard cheese would bring out the best in this bouncy Beaujolais.
Marsala Superiore Oro 2017 Vigna La Miccia
This is a quite distinctive an innovative style of semi-dry Marsala first created by Marco Bartoli back in 1985.
Considered one of Sicily’s winemaking pioneers for his long-standing commitment to the native Sicilian white grape varieties, Grillo and Zibibbo. He produces them on two separate estates: the first in Marsala, in Sicily’s south-west corner, the other on the small island of Pantelleria, south-east of Sicily.
In 1982 De Bartoli created ‘Vigna La Miccia’, classified as an ‘Oro’ or gold Marsala, which is a sweeter, fresher dessert wine produced using a cold vinification process; it reveals an intense bouquet of Grillo and Inzolia grapes.
Fruity and elegant palate with flavours of raisins and dried figs, caramelised walnuts, and freshly ground coffee.
Country: Italy
Region: Marsala, Sicily
Grape: Grillo
Volume: 500ml
ABV: 18%
Vintage: 2016
Suitable for Vegans: Yes
Suitable for Vegetarians: Yes
Food pairing: A classic sweet wine for chocolate or coffee desserts (obviously a Tiramisu would be heavenly) but you could also wander off-road and serve this chilled alongside some aged Parmigiano-Reggiano to highlight the saline, nutty complexity of the cheese.
