Montagny 1er Cru Cuvée Les Grappes D’Or 2019 – Domaine Feuillat-Juillot

An unctuous expression from Montagny, ripe fruit and flowers on the nose with buttery complexity, honeyed melons and a delightful pithy finish reminiscent of pink grapefruit. An awesome wine, the very definition of an overachiever.

Grape: Chardonnay

Volume: 75cl

Food pairing: As with all rich Chardonnays, roasted poultry is always a lovely match but the acidity of this wine would lend itself well to honey roast ham, ripe and creamy cheeses with gently spiced chutneys.

A concentrated and mineral-driven Chardonnay, the 1er Cru Les Grappes d’Or is a blend of five different premier crus on Marne calcaires, from vines dating back to 1950. The juice is then fermented and matured – 30% in 500 litre barrels, 70% in stainless steel.

Françoise Feuillat-Juillot is the daughter of the highly regarded Mercurey producer, Michel Juillot. She grew up amongst the vines and barrels of her family domaine, before studying in Paris and completing a degree in oenology at Dijon University.

She now has 14 hectares of wonderfully sited, mainly old vines, spread amongst 13 different premier crus in the viticultural amphitheatre that is Montagny. She practices a very strict and meticulous form of sustainable viticulture, works the soils mechanically and all grapes are picked by hand.

In 2002, following the death of her partner, Frances finds herself alone in the head of Domaine she finally bought in 2004. Since then the area carries her name and she manages the entire operation, from the vine to the bottle with 4 employees. Currently 80,000 bottles are produced each year. The wines of Domaine Feuillat-Juillot express the quintessence of each of their terroir. These are wines of passion, emotion and elegance. They are recognised and distinguished for their high quality in the press and many prestigious competitions.
